Each year on 11th February, the Church celebrates the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes.
This lovely feast recalls the eighteen appearances of the Blessed Virgin Mary to Saint Bernadette Soubirous at the grotto in Lourdes, France, which began on 11th February 1858, ending on 16th July that same year. It was during this series of appearances that the Blessed Virgin, having been asked Her name three times by Bernadette, finally said “I am the Immaculate Conception”.
The story of Lourdes is often associated with the sick, many of whom travel to the Shrine every year; however, the full story of Our Lady of Lourdes is rich and beautiful and is well worth reading if you are not already familiar with it.

Also, St Bernadette’s life did not end with the visions in Lourdes – she became a religious sister in the Convent of St Gildard in Nevers, France. And it was here that her real path to sanctity took place.
