Sometimes when we use the same prayer over and over, we can sometimes feel a little ‘stuck’ – it can be difficult to find a new meditation for something with which we are already very familiar. With this in mind, and aimed particularly at those who regularly pray the holy Rosary, I hope the following meditation may prove both simple and refreshing.

This short meditation is based on the Joyful Mysteries and it takes as it’s theme for meditation the ‘Hail Mary’ itself.

For each Mystery, read the brief meditation at the start of the decade. Then, focus on the words of the Hail Mary which are highlighted differently for each decade, reflecting each point of meditation.

1. The Annunciation

The clue to the Immaculate Conception is revealed in this Mystery in the opening words of the Angel Gabriel. Mary is filled to overflowing with divine grace; She is the dispenser of these graces, if only we will ask them of Her. Every grace comes from the Lord, Who salutes Mary here through the words of the Angel.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with Thee. Blessed art Thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of Thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

2. The Visitation

As with the Ark of the Covenant, which prefigured the Blessed Virgin, so the Lord is with His chosen maiden; where we find Mary, there we find the Lord. Where She is, great blessings from the Lord descend; and so Elizabeth welcomed Her, recognising the singular privilege granted to Her by God.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with Thee. Blessed art Thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of Thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

3. The Nativity

It was through the Blessed Virgin that the Lord chose to come to us – this was a deliberate choice and speaks greatly of Her place in His divine plan for us and for all humanity. The incarnate Lord has a human Mother in the order of nature; similarly, we have a Mother in the order of grace.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with Thee. Blessed art Thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of Thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

4. The Presentation in the Temple

Simeon had waited so long for the Lord’s promise to be fulfilled; when the Child’s parents brought Him to the temple, this holy man recognised not only the Child long spoken of by the Prophets, but also the Mother, the sign given by Isaiah. Recognising the Child as the Son of God, so too did he recognise this Woman as Mother of the Lord.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with Thee. Blessed art Thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of Thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

5. The Finding in the Temple

Mary knows the pain of losing the Lord – and the joy of finding Him. Today, we find Him in the Sacraments, in the Word and in His Church. The Sacraments of the Church bring the Lord to us throughout life – and take us to the Lord at the moment of death. May the Mother of God obtain for us this grace of a holy and happy death.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with Thee. Blessed art Thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of Thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
